Timeless with a Touch of Rustic

I absolutely love the vibe and colors Baby Benjamin’s mom & dad chose for his newborn photography session. Benjamin’s parents wanted a timeless vibe with a touch of rustic elements. I always aim to deliver timeless images to my newborn photography clients, as I want them to be able to enjoy their portraits for years and years to come. Using a neutral color palette such as cream, white, ivory, beige, and tan really help create timeless images that can be displayed anywhere in the home, not just relegated to the nursery. This newborn portrait was one of my personal favorites, as well as one of Mom & Dad’s favorites! I love how cute Benjamin looks in this knitted romper. Benjamin was a little peanut! This knitted romper is actually one of my smaller knitted rompers from my studio’s newborn photography prop collection and it was still a little big on tiny Baby Benjamin!

Blue as a Accent Color

Baby Benjamin’s mom & dad wanted the majority of his newborn photos to have a neutral color palette. For the accent color, they chose blue, which I think was a great choice for Benjamin’s fair complexion. Blue is always my favorite color for baby boys, but it’s surprisingly not chosen among by clients as often as green is! Benjamin’s nursery has a mix of blue hues and this newborn photo matched perfectly. I always like to ask my clients to tell me a bit about baby’s nursery so I can ensure their newborn photos will be cohesive with their specific space.

A Family Heirloom: Benjamin’s Dad’s Stuffed Bear

One of my absolute FAVORITE things to incorporate into my clients’ newborn photography session is a family heirloom or sentimental item. I always tell my clients, “If it’s important to you, it’s important to me!” During our phone consultation, one of the questions I ask my clients is if they have any family heirlooms or sentimental items they would like to incorporate into their baby’s newborn photography session. Not all my clients have something in mind they’d like to use, but when they do I get so excited! I really love finding a meaningful way to incorporate an item that’s so special to them and their family’s story. After all, your newborn photography session documents the beginning of your family’s legacy and I believe these photographs should always tell your family’s unique story. Because the majority of my clients choose my signature Heirloom Album for baby’s newborn photos and their first family photos, I always strive to tell a story as you turn the pages. Over the years, my clients will cuddle up on the couch with their little one as they grow to look through their album together and tell them the story of how their life began. I love knowing that there will be something special on these pages that their children will recognize, such as this stuffed bear which belonged to Benjamin’s dad when he was a little boy! At first, I wasn’t sure exactly how to pose this special bear with Benjamin because of it’s size! The bears I typically use during newborn photography sessions are teeny tiny bears that are made specifically for newborn photography - they’re the perfect size for baby to hold even with their tiny newborn hands and Benjamin’s dad’s stuffed bear was drastically larger! But then it dawned on me to pose the stuffed bear as if he was giving his new best buddy Benjamin a hug! Look, I’ll admit it - I’m a total sap! I truly care so much for every family I have the pleasure of working with, so making things extra special for each one of them brings me so much joy. It makes me so happy knowing this family will have this special moment to cherish for the rest of their lives.

Baby Mugshots!

My “Baby Mugshots” or “Baby Headshots,” as I like to call them, are ALWAYS a client favorite. Mom & Dad love these sweet and silly newborn portraits that capture baby’s blossoming personality. Typically, Baby Mugshots take place towards the end of the session when baby is more wakeful. Sometimes if baby is awake in the beginning or middle of their newborn photography session, we will take them then. Not every baby will allow me to take these type of portraits. Sometimes I have a super sleepy baby into my newborn photography studio and they just simply won’t wake no matter the trick’s we try! As I always tell my clients, the only requirements for taking these Baby Mugshots are that 1. Baby is awake and 2. Baby isn’t crying. This Baby Mugshot of Benjamin’s is my FAVORITE! I love how it looks like he’s extra feisty in this shot, but he was actually just yawning! It still makes me giggle when I see it because he was such a chill little dude despite how angry he looks in this photo! lol!

Family Portraits and Individual Parent Portraits with Baby!

Every newborn photography session with Angela O’Malley Photography includes fully-guided family poses which includes multiple poses with the whole family, as well as multiple individual parent poses with baby. I always encourage my clients to get behind the camera for portraits with their brand new baby! I know most of my clients won’t be feeling very ‘camera-ready,’ (sleep deprivation is real!) but I always reassure them that I use only the most flattering lighting and angles. These family portraits are so special! Your FIRST family photos EVER! I promise you as time passes you will cherish these photos more than you ever thought possible. Not only do these first family photos with your newborn baby become more valuable in time for YOU, they will also be some of your little one’s most prized possessions someday. Family photos are a MUST in baby’s Heirloom Album. When your baby is grown, they will look back at this time they can’t even remember and feel all the love you’ve had for them since the very beginning. Do you have a photo of yourself as a baby with your mom or dad? If you do, I bet it means the WORLD to you. If you don’t, I bet you wish you could see their proud smiling faces cuddled up with you as a brand new baby. These moments become so much more valuable with time and that’s why my number one goal for your newborn photography session is to provide you with tangible, heirloom artwork that you will be able to enjoy together with your family for the rest of your lives.

Black & White: A Moment Frozen in Time

Black and White Family Photos are a MUST! There’s nothing like a black and white photo to convey such raw emotion. These family portraits are just the absolute sweetest! I love the way Benjamin’s mom and dad are looking at each other! It’s almost as if you can literally FEEL the love, joy, and pride they’re feeling for each other and the birth of their perfect baby boy. These black and white portraits are such great way to capture this moment in your life in such a timeless way. Black and white photos will never, ever go out of style!

“Of All the Things My Hands Have Held the Best by Far is You”

Upon request, every newborn photography session can also include what I like to call ‘creative family detail portraits.’ These portraits incorporate parents’ hands in a creative way to showcase how tiny baby is and how surrounded by love they are. While not all my clients request this type of portrait, the ones who do absolutely LOVE them. I may be biased, by I love them, too! It really tugs at my heartstrings to see this new little life surrounded by the hands of the two people who love them most in this world. It also becomes a more impactful portrait with time. Looking back, you won’t be able to believe that your little one used to be this tiny. In a blink of an eye, they’ll be too big for you to even hold in your arms, let alone in just the palm of your hands.

Austin, Texas Newborn Photography

The One for the WALL!

This photo was Mom & Dad’s favorite. They chose a stunning 16x24 metal print of this portrait to hang in their bedroom. It truly was a piece of art! Creative family detail portraits are always a perfect choice for wall art. Every day you will look at it in awe that your baby was once this small. It’s sure to bring a smile to your face as you walk by it every day and remember all those feelings you felt as a brand new parent.

I hope you enjoyed looking through Baby Benjamin’s Newborn Photography Session! It was such a pleasure getting to know this sweet little family and capturing these precious memories for them.

Baby Henry’s Session | Austin, Texas Newborn Photography

How precious is this little dude? The squishy rolls? The cheeks? The LIPS!? Baby Henry was such an adorable guy! I was so excited to meet Henry and his wonderful parents. This family was referred to me by a wonderful postpartum doula who I know in Austin. Before our session, Mom sent me an iPhone shot of Baby Henry and I literally gasped out loud. He is just SO handsome and I swear he has some of the best baby lippies I’ve ever seen! I was so excited to take his newborn portraits at my Austin, Texas newborn photography studio. Henry weighed 8lbs 6oz at birth, so when he came into my East Austin studio for his newborn photos at 14 days old he was the perfect little chunk. Every newborn photographer will tell you they LOVE photographing a chunky baby!

Those lips!

I absolutely loved Henry in this shade of soft-blue. That little lip purse he gave us in this photo is so darling! Baby blue is one of my most favorite colors, but it’s not one that is requested very often. The majority of my boy-moms request green. Green is great! But nothing is better than blue, in my opinion!

Snug as a Bug!

Henry much preferred being wrapped. Although he was a little fussy when we started his session, as soon as I got him all swaddled up he slept like a dream. I had just received this gorgeous mustard wool flokati rug in the mail from my favorite newborn photography prop vendor, Luneberry, and I was so excited to use it. Mom and I were really in-sync when it came to our favorite colors, which is always great! She loved this mustard look and so did I. In fact, she was so complimentary of this mustard setup that I made sure to quickly plan another mustard setup in my head to add on to Henry’s newborn photography session. Mustard isn’t a color I receive requests for often, so when I do I really go for it!

Little Boy Blue

It didn’t matter the shade, Henry looked GREAT in blue! This darker shade really complimented his fair skin tone. I added a bonnet to this setup and I heard Mom make an audible, “Awwwww!” behind me when I put it on. Moms almost always love when I put bonnets on their baby. I love how the bonnet frames Henry’s perfectly round chunky cheeks. He really is such a handsome guy, isn't he?

Bright & Boho

This setup was my favorite by-far! And guess what? It was Mom’s favorite, too! She commented on how the boho vibe of this setup was so similar to the style in which they decorate their home, which made me so happy to hear! I have been collecting vintage Turkish rugs for years and they are probably my favorite special touch I incorporate into my Austin newborn photography sessions. I love offering my clients something unique in their newborn photos and vintage Turkish rugs are definitely not something you see in most newborn photos. I get so excited when I have clients that specifically request I use them for their baby’s photography session. My Austin, Texas newborn photography studio has a collection of different colors to choose from, but this one is definitely one of my favorites! This hand-carved wooden newborn bed is also one of my most requested props. There is nothing cuter than a tiny baby in a tiny bed, is there? One of my main goals during my newborn photography sessions is to capture images that can be displayed as art on the walls of my clients’ homes. Therefore, I try to stay away from anything too ‘cutesy’ that would need to be relegated to just the nursery. Mom couldn’t wait to order a large print of this newborn portrait to hang in their home. It truly looked perfect as a beautiful wood-framed canvas and I was so happy to help make that vision come to life!

Baby Emmy’s Session | Austin, Texas Newborn Photography

I absolutely loved having Miss Emmy and her parents into my East Austin newborn photography studio for her newborn photography session. Emmy’s mom had inquired to schedule her session several months before baby girl arrived, but once she found out that she was going to have to have a c-section she opted to schedule an in-home newborn photographer instead. Unfortunately, Emmy’s newborn photographer had to cancel last-minute the day of her newborn session and mom messaged me in a panic. She explained that she had been worried she’d be having some mobility issues or need longer to recover after her cesarean, but that she was actually feeling great. Miss Emmy was already nearing the end of the ‘two weeks after birth window’ that’s typically recommended for newborn photography and I hated the thought of leaving such a sweet family in a pickle after having their other session canceled. I’m not typically able to fit in last-minute bookings, but I had two previously booked babies arrive early the week before so I had one more spot I could open up after shuffling a few things around. I am so happy I was able to squeeze them in! Miss Emmy is such a beautiful baby! Although due to timing we weren’t able to have an in-studio consultation to plan Emmy’s session, we had a great chat over the phone to discuss color preferences and special requests that Mom and Dad had for her newborn portraits. Mom and Dad chose neutrals and soft pinks for Emmy’s colors. For special requests, Mom mentioned she loved flowers and would like to keep things feminine and romantic. Neutrals are always my favorite when it comes to a color palette for newborn portraits because I think it really helps create a timeless image and one that can be displayed anywhere in the home - not just the nursery. I was thrilled to create beautiful setups for Emmy’s newborn session with these colors and requests in mind!

Heart Full of Love

When I heard Mom mention she wanted to keep things feminine and romantic, I immediately knew I had to use my new hand-carved wooden heart bowl from Luneberry! If you’re not a newborn photographer, you may not know what ‘Luneberry’ is, but if you are a newborn photographer then you definitely know what Luneberry is! Luneberry is an incredible newborn photography prop shop based in Houston, Texas. It’s owned by one of the hardest working women I know and it truly is the best quality newborn photography prop vendor there is! Cesia, the owner of Luneberry, created her amazing empire when she started making and selling headbands for newborn photographers on Etsy. Today, Luneberry sells everything a newborn photographer could ever dream of to thousands, if not tens-of-thousands, of newborn photographers all over the world. Chances are that every bed, bowl, box, basket, and bucket you’ve seen me use are all from Luneberry. I have a bit of a prop addiction! Ha! But how can you not buy all of the things when they’re adorable tiny-versions specifically made to fit newborn babies oh-so-perfectly?! But I digress… the heart bowl was perfect for the romantic touch Mom had wanted and I was so excited to use my shiny new prop!

Austin-Newborn-Photographer-Emmy-2.jpg

Teddy Time

Keeping with the pink and neutral theme, I added a dainty bow and a sweet little teddy bear to this beautiful setup. These tiny teddy bears are a very frequent request I receive from the families I work with. Each teddy is handmade in the Ukraine by a lovely woman named Vasilisa from the most high-quality Angora yarn. I think they add the most darling touch to my newborn photos and I know my clients agree! Doesn’t Emmy look so sweet holding onto her pink bear? Adorable! This gorgeous close-up was one of Mom and Dad’s favorites. She truly is such a beautiful baby and I love how this photo focuses all the attention on her perfect face.

Baby girl with pink tulips by Austin newborn photographer Angela O’Malley

Dreaming of Spring

I have to admit that this setup was my absolute favorite. In fact, it honestly might be one of my favorite newborn photos I’ve ever taken. Miss Emmy looks so perfect all snuggly and tucked into this fuzzy white blanket. The textured edges and long bows of this bonnet bring such a wonderful feminine touch and, of course, the pretty pink tulips really bring the romantic element to life! Lately, I have been loving using fresh flowers in my newborn photography sessions! I frequently visit the East Austin Whole Foods located on E. 5th Street across the street from my newborn photography studio to purchase fresh tulips, daisies, sunflowers, eucalyptus, etc. However, these particular tulips might have fooled you! They’re actually not real! Even up-close it’s nearly impossible to tell they’re fake flowers. I found them at the Magnolia Market in Waco, Texas while visiting Chip & Joanna’s ‘Disneyland of HGTV’! I wish I had them in more colors because they bring such a beautiful touch to my newborn photos.

Austin-Newborn-Photographer-Emmy-4.jpg

Mugshots!

Emmy gave me so many fun faces during her ‘Baby Mugshots’! She was wide awake and eager to show us her blossoming personality! She was such an adorable and expressive little lady!

Austin-Newborn-Photographer-Emmy-5.jpg

Rosy the Riveter

Ahhhh! This photo has to be the best of the bunch! She is definitely giving off some major ‘Rosy the Riveter’ vibes, right?! She’s a tough cookie already and she wants the world to know it! #GIRLPOWER! You tell ‘em, Emmy!

Baby Evan’s Newborn Photography Session | Austin, Texas Newborn Photographer

Sibling Love

How precious are these two!? I absolutely LOVE when I have kiddos come into the studio for their new sibling’s newborn portrait sessions. Baby Evan’s big sister, Emerson, was truly one of the sweetest little ladies I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. She was so gentle during her sibling portraits with baby brother and incredibly patient throughout the entire session. You can see on her face how PROUD she is to be a big sister. It just melted my heart! I have two younger siblings of my own and I know how special that bond can be. I have no doubt that these two will be best buds!

The Sweetest Sister

Aren’t sibling portraits the absolute sweetest thing? There really is nothing like seeing both your babies snuggled up together. During siblings shots is usually when I hear parents sniffling behind me and it always makes me tear up a bit to hear them overcome with so much emotion! Capturing these precious memories for my clients and their families brings me so much joy. When your babies get bigger and start arguing over who’s hogging the bathroom while getting ready for school in the morning, you’ll be able to show them a time when they were much sweeter to each other! And some day, when your babies grow up and head off on their own, you’ll be even more grateful to have these priceless memories to look back on.

Austin-Newborn-Photographer-Baby-Evan 3.jpg

Family Portraits for Now & Forever

Individual parent portraits and portraits with just mom and dad are also so special to capture. I always remind my clients, these precious memories aren’t just for you to look back on. Someday when your babies get older they’ll cherish looking at these moments just as much, if not more, than even you do. They’ll see themselves so tiny and brand new being held with such love by their proud parents. You could truly see the love, joy, and pride in Evan’s parents eyes. What a wonderful mom and dad Evan and Emerson have! I am so happy for this perfect little family of four.

And then they were Four

You can see it in their expressions how happy these three are to welcome Baby Evan into their family! Their first family portraits! Wow! It is always such an honor to capture my clients’ family portraits for the very first time. I know they’ll look back on these images for years to come with so much love.

Austin-Newborn-Photographer-Baby-Evan 8.jpg

A Mother’s Unconditional Love

This beautiful portrait of Mama and her two babies might be my favorite from the entire session. There really is nothing in this world like a mother’s love. There is so much love, grace, care, and power in this image. I absolutely love it. And that snuggle from big sister, Emmy?! She really helped make this portrait extra special! I told ya’ll she is one of the sweetest little ladies I’ve ever met!

It’s no surprise that Miss Emmy is so sweet. Her mom and dad are both so kind and thoughtful. Katie, Evan and Emerson’s mama, sent me the most touching message after our time together.

ANGELA!!! These are amaaaazing! I have sobbed looking and relooking at them (and I promise it’s not new mama hormones!) Your work is so beautiful. Thank you for sharing your talents… you’ve exceeded any expectation I could have dreamed up.

Xoxo,

Katie

PS- Emerson not only approved, but has added photographer to her life goals. She said “I want to work at her office!”

Ahhh!!! (Insert the sobbing emoji face here! lol!) These kind words from Katie meant the world to me! I am always so honored to be the one my clients trust to capture these priceless memories for them. It really is a huge responsibility to be the one documenting such a joyous and momentous occasion as bringing a new member of your family into the world and I never take that lightly. I truly have the BEST clients and this wonderful family is definitely at the top of the list!

And is Miss Emerson my new business partner, you ask? Not yet, but there is position with her name on just as soon as she’s ready! I mean, she’s technically already had her first headshot (below) so she’s already well on her way to being a professional photographer!

Star Moment for Sister

Emerson brought two dresses with her to the studio. When we were finished with family portraits she mentioned she was disappointed that she didn’t get the chance to wear her new fancy black dress. Well, I certainly couldn’t have this ray of sunshine leave my studio feeling blue! So she put on that new fancy black dress and we took a beautiful portrait of just her! After being such an angel throughout the entire session, she definitely deserved her moment to shine as star of the show!

Austin-Newborn-Photographer-Baby-Evan 10.jpg

Green was his Color

Baby Evan had his solo time behind the camera as well, of course! This portrait is one of my favorites of his! Is there anything cuter than a tiny baby in a tiny bed? I love this color green that Mama requested, it looked so great with his skin tone. And he blessed us with a smile to-boot! How precious!

Austin-Newborn-Photographer-Baby-Evan 11.jpg

Baby Mugshots!

Usually towards the end of our 2-4 hour newborn portrait sessions, babies starts to wake up a bit. That’s when it’s time for some of my absolute favorite images - “Baby Mugshots!" These images take a lot of patience to capture because newborn babies don’t really focus their eyes at that age, but sometimes we get lucky and they give us the cutest and silliest expressions. I’m not going to lie, that bottom left ‘mugshot’ has to be one of my all-time favorites. Can you even with that look?

Too Cool for School

Let’s be honest, this one needed a moment of its own! You’re too cool for us already, little dude!
